Tip #1: There Are Rules So Make Sure You Know Them:
This may or may not be a surprise, but ask your attorney if your county has particular rules or standing court orders that govern your behavior throughout the divorce process. For example, you may be prohibited from selling or transferring assets. It is important to learn these rules so you can stay on the right side of the law.
Tip #2: Privacy Concerns:
While likely not a requirement for you to share your holiday plans with your co-parent, it is a good idea to make sure you and your co-parent make a plan to ensure that your child has the most memorable holiday possible. Children and families report increased stress during the holidays due to schedule conflicts and extreme travel expectations.
Tip #3: Get Prepared:
Much of the work in a divorce center around your finances, assets, and liabilities. The more you can do to gather that information on your own, the better. However, just as important to you as a client, you need to make sure you are mentally and emotionally prepared for this journey. Even if you are the person seeking the divorce, this process is tough on you and your family. Do not discount these feelings. If you need someone to talk to about the divorce process, please let us know.
Tip #4: Do Your Homework:Â
Yes, like your least favorite grade schoolteacher, we give you homework to do. And yes, we will remind you when your homework becomes due. Sometimes, we can enlist the services of a family member or accountant, but it is important that you get us the documentation that we request in order to expedite the process and make sure that your rights are protected.
Tip #5: Ask Questions:
This is your process, and it is important that you are heard and your questions are answered. While there is a lot of gray area in family law, you should be able to understand your options and the risks or rewards associated with each option.
Tip #6: Take Notes:
There are a lot of reasons that you will want to take notes during the divorce process. Some people find it cathartic. Other people find it a helpful way to organize your thoughts. We recommend taking notes for the purpose of being able to recall dates and events at a later time (we in the lawyer business, call that, refreshing your recollection). When in doubt, document the event by taking notes.
