Debt Relief Advice: Learn to Talk to Creditors

Back To Bankruptcy and Debt Relief Video Help Page

As the video above explains, the best debt relief advice that we can give you is to hire a bankruptcy attorney. One of the many reasons for doing so is that you can “forward” all calls to them and essentially tell creditors to stop bothering you.

However, not everyone is ready to take that step. The idea of actually airing your financial woes with a stranger and going through bankruptcy is something that many people feel embarrassed about.

Hopefully, the information we include on our site is helping to alleviate some of those negative feelings and educate people about the process to make it less intimidating. But until you actually do take the step, I wanted to offer further debt relief advice.

Debt Relief Advice: Tips for Talking with Creditors

In many ways, talking with creditors comes down to practicing etiquette while maintaining respect for yourself. What does that mean?

Be honest. If you keep stringing creditors along and pretending that you’ll be able to pay soon, soon, soon, of course they’re going to continue to call when the money doesn’t come in. When you know you can’t pay, tell them that and be clear about the fact that continuing to call won’t make the money come in faster.

Be polite. Sometimes creditors can be downright nasty when someone isn’t paying, but you don’t have to stoop to their level. Even if they become pushy or rude, remain calm and respectful.

Be strong. No one should have to deal with a creditor who yells at them, insults them, calls several times a day, or calls at all hours. It is not professional behavior, and you don’t have to take it. But if you do answer the phone, resist the urge to yell right back – politely tell them what you don’t appreciate about their behavior and hang up.

Debt Relief Advice: Beyond Talking

Of course, sometimes the problem goes beyond talking and hanging up on someone rude. If the harassment doesn’t stop, you have protections under the terms of the Fair Credit Collection Practices Act. One provision is that the law allows you to write creditors a letter demanding that they stop calling you, and they have to comply with it.

If you are not sure how to handle this on your own or want more debt relief advice, talk to a bankruptcy attorney today.
